Michigan Says No to Torture: Press Conference at State Capitol.
Thursday, June 11, 9:30 a.m., Michigan Capitol East Steps.
In front of a 24 foot banner proclaiming “End Torture Forever,” Michigan legal, religious, and peace groups are coming together to mark Torture Awareness Month. Together they will call for an investigation into U.S. sponsored torture and strong anti-torture legislation. Speakers will include:
*Rev. Reid Hamilton: With military and legal experience in the Judge Advocate General Corps and religious training as an Episcopal priest, Rev. Hamilton speaks powerfully of the need for the United States to respect the laws he trained his paratroopers, as well as the moral reasons to oppose torture.
*ACLU spokesperson: The American Civil Liberties Union has been in the lead pushing for full transparency regarding detainee abuse. The ACLU is currently fighting against efforts to suppress photos of interrogations that further document torture
