The Peace Education Center, in cooperation with the Michigan Darfur Coalition, will host Dr. Ashis Brahma in an effort to connect Americans with the everyday lives of those in refugee camps in Darfur.
Dr. Brahma will speak from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in Room 303 of the International Center at Michigan State University.
Dr. Brahma is beginning a 12-state educational tour in October, and his first stop will be Michigan. The purpose of Dr. Brahma’s visit is to better connect audiences with the spirit of the people in refugee camps. His presentation includes a history of the region and a personal account describing the wide range of attributes of refugees he has met, ranging from resilience to dignity, and even humor.
Dr. Brahma is currently working in Uganda. Prior to his work there, he provided direct medical aid to refugees from Darfur, until 2008 when he was evacuated due to the hostility and imminent danger in the area. At that time, he was the only doctor in a camp of tens of thousands.
Dr. Brahma was interviewed on the Emmy-winning segment,”Searching for Jacob,” on CBS’s 60 Minutes. You can watch the full segment at the CBS website by clicking here.
