SUMMARY:PEC Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Peace Education Center Turns 50! Join us to celebrate\, reminisce\, and sing songs of protest and solidarity. \nThough we’ve been around much longer\, it’s been 50 years since the PEC officially became a nonprofit. That’s a great excuse for a party! \nJoin us on November 1st at the University Lutheran Church in East Lansing (doors open at 6:30\, program at 7). Dress in your best hippie clothes from 1975 (if you want)\, bring old photos or memorabilia to display – and bring your stories. We will have a time for PEC members and others to share – very short – quips about an event or protest or activity you remember from the last 50 years of working\, protesting\, taking action for peace and justice. \nThere will also be a concert/sing-along with Paul Tinkerhess\, life-long peace activist and singer/songwriter based in Ann Arbor. Paul can tell you his stories\, but we want to hear from you too. \nThis is a fundraiser for the PEC. Suggested donation of $20. \nIf you can’t attend but would like to support the PEC\, you can donate here!

SUMMARY:Mother's Day For Peace
DESCRIPTION:While the concept of Mother’s Day has devolved into a spectacle of cards\, flowers and brunches\, it’s forgotten that the original intent of that special day was to promote peace. \nIn fact\, the original Mother’s Day was initiated by Julia Ward Howe (she of Battle Hymn of the Republic fame) around 1870\, hoping it would be a day for mothers to campaign for an end to war following the carnage of the American Civil War. \nWith that in mind\, the Lansing Area Peace Education Center will hold a special Mother’s Day event/fundraiser on Saturday\, May 6. It is one of the activities the center is holding this year as part of a celebration of its half century of service in the Greater Lansing area. \nThis event will feature the popular local band Jackalope\, and a special guest appearance by Julia Ward Howe herself! \nSaturday\, May 6 at 7 PM\nAllen Neighborhood Center\n1611 E Kalamazoo St\, Lansing \nSnacks will be offered. Everyone is welcome! If you’d like to donate to this PEC fundraiser\, the suggested amount is $25. Payable at the door or online HERE. \nSUPPORT PEC!\nBring your mom\, a friend\, or anyone who would enjoy a night of music and fun! \n\nFor more than 50 years\, the Peace Education Center has worked for peace and justice\, its roots taking hold in the late 1960s with opposition to the Vietnam War. Since then it has protested wars in Iraq\, Afghanistan and Bosnia; fought for equal rights for the LGBTQ community; and spoke out against gun violence. \nJackalope is a local\, four-piece band made up of Charlie Richardson\, Diana Farmer\, David Stowe\, and Mike Lawrence. A long-time supporter of the Peace Education Center\, the band has played together for almost 10 years and is known for its delightfully upbeat style of vocally harmonized pop\, rock and country covers.” \nIt was on May 9\, 1914\, that President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day “as a public expression of love and reverence for the mothers of our country.” CLICK HERE for more information on the history of Mother’s Day. \nEVENT FLYER
