Sign-On: Joint Community Statement Opposing ICE’s “Freaky Friday” War on Children and Families
The Lansing Area Peace Education Center and allied organizations are circulating this joint community statement opposing ICE’s new “Freaky Friday” program, which targets immigrant children and families through intimidation and coercive tactics.
We invite organizations across Michigan and beyond to sign on in solidarity. Please read the full statement below and add your group’s name to be included in the list of supporting organizations.
JOINT COMMUNITY STATEMENT OPPOSING ICE’S “FREAKY FRIDAY” WAR ON CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

A sadistic and possibly illegal ICE operation targeting children as young as 14 years old (and early reports say could eventually extend to children as young as 10 years old), effectively coercing them to waive their legal rights and to intimidate their families is underway.
“Freaky Friday” is the name immigration advocates are calling the new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) program targeting “unaccompanied” immigrant minors.
According to the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC):
“Certain immigrant children who are in government custody may receive an intimidating communication from Immigrations Customs and Enforcement (ICE) offering money to children who voluntarily return to their country of origin. This effort seems aimed at encouraging unaccompanied immigrant children to give up their rights to due process and immigrant protections, such as asylum. These rights are currently guaranteed under the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA), a longstanding federal law passed with bipartisan support.”
KEY DETAILS:
TARGETS: Government agencies are sending letters to “unaccompanied” (arrived in the US alone without their parents) immigrant children who are in detention or who have been in ICE custody but were released to sponsoring relatives or foster families.
THE PURPOSE: The letters, which offer a $2500 payment to those who voluntarily leave the country, are designed to pressure vulnerable children into waiving their legal right to pursue immigration relief under a U.S. law designed for victims of human trafficking and smuggling. Advocates believe just receiving the letters will be enough to scare some children to “self-deport.”
THE THREAT: ICE officials could threaten children who refuse to waive their rights and accept this cash offer to “voluntarily self-deport” to their home countries with: 1) Immediate and indefinite detention upon reaching age 18, and 2) The arrest of family members on charges they trafficked these children.
MIRC notes that children have the right to take advantage of TVPRA protections without fear of retaliation in the form of detention of family members or their unlawful detention.”
THE RESPONSE: Several organizations have issued community alerts and offered legal aid to affected children. The Michigan Immigrant Resource Center (MIRC) sent a video to the children they represent and are planning a group presentation to those they don’t represent, explaining the letter and what rights they have. They will instruct them to not sign anything and that these letters are suspected to be illegal, report advocates. (See addition information for families below.)
This outrageous war of intimidation of unaccompanied minor children and their families has no place in a fair and just society that honors the rule of law. This latest initiative reflects the ongoing callous brutality of ICE operations that are “disappearing” our neighbors, terrorizing our neighborhoods, and tearing apart families.
THE FOLLOWING ORGANIZATIONS DEMAND:
- An immediate end to this program.
- An immediate end to incarcerating children and families in inhumane and often brutal deportation centers.
- An immediate end to initiatives rounding up “suspected” immigrants using racial profiling and places of employment as pretexts for arrests.
- The reunification of all children with their families in the US, as soon as possible, and the transfer of unaccompanied children to appropriate, non-incarcerative facilities or homes.

The letters will come in the form of a letter or email from the child’s immigration officer. The operation is currently only targeting “unaccompanied” immigrant children. Please share accurate information, make sure children are not scared into “self-deporting,” retain copies of any letters or emails you receive and contact your lawyer immediately before signing or sending anything. Una operación sádica y posiblemente ilegal de la Migra dirigida a niños de tan solo 14 años (y que, según los primeros informes, podría extenderse a niños de tan solo 10 años), obligándolos a renunciar a sus derechos legales e intimidando a sus familias, está en marcha.
